Honest Policy

On school lunch breaks, we were always sent outside, whatever the weather, to get some 'fresh air'.
In the winter, it was bitterly cold. The wind would whistle up our blue-grey tweed skirts and knees would redden, barely visible above long grey socks, pulled up as far as they would go.
A cat and mouse game ensued, between us and the teachers as we tried to get out of the cold and find a warm place inside. A group of six of us, would hide in the music rooms, until we were discovered and ejected outside again. Eventually, detentions would be issued, for the following Monday, by unsympathetic teachers, with an over inflated sense of importance.
Detention was an hour and on one occasion involved writing an essay: Honesty is the best policy. I enjoyed writing the essay, because it gave me the opportunity to admonish the staff, who in my opinion, had treated us unfairly.
I neither heard, nor do I care what they thought of the piece, or whether they even read it. Suffice to say, their lack of empathy only fuelled the rebel in me; the next time it was cold, we headed straight for the music rooms once more.

Cast of Thousands

After a flower's petals have dropped, the left over seed cases and plant pods, filled with a few or with thousands of seeds, continue to make a garden interesting.

Victorian Tea

Victoria sponge—an inadmissible recipe in cookery lessons from my school days. The cake, also known as Victoria sandwich, was named after Queen Victoria, who was said to be partial to a slice or two with her tea. For the classic recipe: here

Lemon Sicilian

The ceramic pot above was purchased on a spring jaunt to the beautiful island of Sicily, Italy. The ceramic shops of Ortigia in Syracuse, are filled with the bright colours of Majolica, adorning every kind of household object or ornament you can think of. As you can imagine, this makes choosing one piece exceptionally difficult.
The lemon pot, was in a row of pots on top of a wardrobe. Each as different in size and decoration as can be, which meant although my eye was drawn to it, it didn't grab my attention. On the second visit, the pot was brought down for me to take a closer look. I admired the light flowing lines of the painted lemons and leaves, coupled with jade, ultramarine and a rosy glaze—I was sold!

Royal Pea

This could very well be the pea from the fairytale: The Princess and the Pea.
A charming fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, about how the extreme sensitivity and hence proven royality of a young girl, was proved by the addition of a pea under her mattress.

The Hierophant

Hierophant by Alison Day

Here's my final illustration for the May bootcamp. The main assignment was to illustrate a Tarot card, which was the equivalent of my star sign of Taurus - the Hierophant.

In ancient Greece, the Hierophant was a priest, who passed his time interpreting the ancient mysteries. In Tarot, the appearance of this card has to do with education, beliefs and knowledge.
