Rusty Inside

Today, a light lunch at the restaurant across the road from the hotel of Mezzes: calamari, Greek salad and taramasalata accompanied by crusty bread in a wicker basket. Fanta, a glass of the local Cressi and ice cold bottled water.

Our waiter—dark haired with silvered edges, deposits the bottled water with a glass on the table and says:

'Nero' (water), then he adds with a warning tone, 'but not too much, otherwise you will become rusty inside.'

Amused, I laugh and reply:

'Yes, too much and I will need some olive oil to move again.'

He pauses to take in what I said. Then comprehension slowly crosses his darkly tanned face. With a broad grin—revealing an assortment of teeth and a twinkle in his eye, he wanders off to serve another table tray on hand.

Coasting Along

Molson, a Canadian beer company, has come up with an ingenious idea for its beer coasters, which is also an ecologically friendly one too. In a special campaign, they have infused their beer coasters with seeds, so that when planted and watered they should grow into black spruce trees.

Love the idea, but I am curious if the infusion of beer into these coasters as they fulfil their original task of soaking up beer, before they are planted will have any effect on the evolution of black spruce trees in the long run?

The prototype (2008), for a revolutionary new bathroom concept, thought up and designed by Ron Arad with bathroom Italian bathroom design brand Teuco. 

Two in one, the large cylindrical dish-shaped structure morphs from shower to bath in one, 180 degree turn. Initially saving on the purchase of multiple bathroom furniture pieces, but you really need a spacious bathroom to accommodate it.

Discovering Groningen by Waterbus

With the weather warming up, now’s the opportunity to take one of the circular boat trips round Groningen and view the city from another angle.

Lasting about an hour, the trip starts across from the Central Station and follows the canals that circle the city centre. With refreshments on board one can sit back and enjoy the multitude of historical buildings, bridges, towers and houseboats that seem to glide effortlessly by. This is accompanied by a pre-recorded tour guide via the tannoy on Groningen’s history and inhabitants, in Dutch, English and German.

If you would prefer to see the Groninger countryside on a more extended trip then maybe the Reitdiepcruise is more for you. Leaving Groningen early in the morning on the ‘Ommelaand’ and returning at 20.00 in the evening, the trip follows the Reitdiep channel to a lake called the “Lauwersmeer". Included in the ticket price is morning tea or coffee and lunch.

Other cruise destinations available from Groningen are Nienoord, Delfzijl - Dollardvaart, Damsterdiep, and the lakes, Zuidlaarder Meer and Paterswoldse Meer. The boats ‘Pronkjewail’, and ‘Goudraand’ of the excursion company Kool, sail all the year round and are also available for group excursions such as weddings, business lunches, school trips and promotions.
